Caring for Your Mental Health – There Is No Health without Mental Health

Many believe only those with mental health challenges, such as a mental illness, have to worry about mental health. And if one does have a mental illness like depression or bipolar, then mental health does become very important, but the fact is everyone has mental health and everyone needs to care for their mental health, just like they care for other types of health. For example, a person may cut down on his or her red meat consumption for heart health and one needs to take similar actions for his or her mental health.

Some tips to care for your mental health:

  • Value yourself and treat yourself with kindness and respect
  • Take care of your body. Your mental health is, in part, driven by brain health so how you take care of your body, such as by eating nutritious food really matters.
  • Surround yourself with positive, support people who can help when things get challenging.
  • Give of yourself by helping others.
  • Learn how to deal with stress such as through journaling or taking a walk.
  • Quiet your mind by trying to meditate, pray or use relaxation exercises.
  • Keep alcohol and drug use to a minimum. Some people use these substance to self-medication when things aren’t going well but this will harm, not help, your mental health.
  • Get mental health help when you need it. Getting help is a sign of strength and proactive care of your mental health.

Remember, there is no health without mental health.
